What is timeline-qualified pipeline?
Dollar amount without a decision date is vanity pipeline.
Founders love a big ARR number in Salesforce. They hate asking when the buyer will actually decide. So the forecast fills with logos that are "interested" and quiet for a quarter.
Ehrenberg-Bass / LinkedIn B2B Institute: about 95% of B2B buyers are out of market. Pipeline without a decision date is a story. Timeline qualification is how you stop counting the 95% as forecast.
What does timeline-qualified mean?
Timeline-qualified pipeline is opportunity value plus a credible answer to when the buyer will choose.
Not "sometime this year." A window: this month, this quarter, after budget lock, after the incumbent renews, after the new VP lands. Tie it to a buying window, not to hope.
If you cannot name the date logic, you do not have pipeline. You have a CRM souvenir.
Why do teams skip the date?
Because firmographic fit feels like progress.
They see employee count, industry, and tech stack, and call it qualified. Firmographic fit vs buyer intent is the split. Fit says they could buy. Intent and timeline say they might buy now.
Salesforce still puts about 27% of reps at quota. Inflated pipeline with no dates is one reason the other 73% miss. The number looked healthy. The calendar did not.
Forrester's ~84-day B2B cycle when a deal is needed is another receipt. If your "pipeline" has no decision window inside that kind of span, you are forecasting fog.
How do you qualify timeline without stalking buyers?
Ask for the trigger, not a vague close date.
Four questions that earn a real answer:
- What has to be true before you pick a vendor?
- Is there a renewal, board date, or budget lock that forces a choice?
- Who else has to say yes, and when do they meet?
- If this slips a quarter, what breaks for you?
Then log the trigger in the CRM next to amount. Amount without trigger is incomplete.
On the Signals side, score buying windows without a huge TAM. Windows beat spray lists. De-anon on your site (RB2B, Vector), G2 category traffic, competitor engagement. Those are timing clues. Enrich. Then first touch. Then ask for the meeting with a date logic.
What belongs in a timeline-qualified stage definition?
Minimum fields: amount, next step, decision trigger, target decision window, last signal date.
Optional but useful: incumbent renewal date, champion's job risk, budget owner named.
Kill stages that only say "demo completed" with no window. Demo completed and no timeline is still out-of-market theater.
Grow spend should respect the same law. See grow-stage spend before the page closes. Do not pour paid at accounts with fit and no window.
How does this change the weekly forecast?
You report two numbers.
Timeline-qualified pipeline: opportunities with amount and a credible decision window inside your active horizon.
Watchlist: fit accounts with signals but no decision date yet. Nurture without spam. Do not put them in the board forecast.
If this, then that. If you mix them, leadership hears a fiction. If you separate them, you can staff Convert on the real windows and keep Signals hunting.
Monday.com's CTR drop from 2.94% to 0.84% reminds you inbound got harder. Harder attention means you cannot afford to treat lukewarm logos as committed dollars.
How do I pressure-test this week?
Export open opportunities.
Mark each: has decision window? has trigger? last real signal within 30 days? If under half pass, your pipeline is inflated. Move the fails to watchlist. Rewrite the stage exit criteria today.
Would you rather a big ARR column that slips every month, or a smaller number that turns into meetings and choices on a date?
Adapt or fail. Qualify the when. Stop forecasting the 95%.
FAQ
Is a close date in CRM enough?
No. A date without a trigger is often fiction. Log why that date is real.
What if the buyer will not give a timeline?
They may be out of market. Keep them on a signal watchlist. Do not force them into forecast.
How does this fit Signals → Convert → Grow?
Signals detect windows. Convert turns windows into meetings and clear next steps. Grow scales spend only on timeline-qualified motion.
Can AI set the timeline for me?
No. AI as operator can flag stale opps and missing fields. You confirm the trigger with the buyer.
What metric replaces vanity pipeline?
Timeline-qualified pipeline coverage plus meetings from signal-matched sends. Not raw ARR in stage 1.
