What is a purchase label in B2B copy?
CRM is a purchase label. Meetings and runway are the desire.
A purchase label is the product or category word buyers type into search, put on a RFP, and get finance to approve. "Outbound platform." "Product analytics." "De-anon." "AI SDR." Procurement needs a noun. Buyers need a life change. Most B2B copy sells the noun and hopes the life change is obvious. It is not.
Market the desire under the purchase label. Label alone is catalog copy. Desire alone is a pep talk buyers cannot PO.
What counts as a purchase label?
Words that show up on invoices, comparison pages, and G2 categories.
Examples that stay honest as examples: CRM, outbound platform, website de-anonymization, product analytics (PostHog-class), enrichment, AEO for B2B blogs. The label is how the category is shopped. It is not the reason someone stays late to fix pipeline.
If your homepage only repeats the label, you are fighting SEO with no Convert. If you only poet about "transform your GTM" with no label, procurement has nothing to buy.
What is the desire under the label?
Desire is the outcome the buyer wants in plain life language.
Fewer ghosts. More held meetings. CAC they can explain. Runway. Being the team that books from signals instead of spray. Status inside the company when the board asks "what changed?"
Desire first is the law. The funnel is a vehicle. The purchase label is the shelf tag. The desire is why they walk to the shelf.
Raise pain and desire contrast, then make the path short and believable with a concrete mechanism. Not a slogan.
How do I pass the grunt test with both?
A stranger should grunt: what do I get, how does life improve, what pain leaves, why trust you.
"AI-native outbound orchestration platform" fails. They have to decode. "Book meetings from people already on your site or on G2 this week" can pass. Keep the label nearby so they know what to buy. Lead with the gruntable outcome. See grunt test for SaaS messaging.
When you position an AI feature, same rule. Feature dump is purchase-label spam. Desire plus mechanism is Convert.
How should a Convert page use the label?
Three-line pattern that holds.
- Desire claim first. What changes in their week.
- Mechanism second. How the product creates that result in steps they can picture.
- Purchase label third or in nav and comparison modules. So search and procurement still work.
Do not hide the category so hard that G2 and RFPs cannot find you. Do not lead with the category so hard that humans bounce.
Ehrenberg-Bass / LinkedIn B2B Institute: about 5% in-market. That 5% still shops with labels. They buy when desire and path feel true.
What are common purchase-label mistakes?
- Label as hero, desire as footnote. "We are the leading X." Leading at what for whose life?
- Desire without a buyable noun. Beautiful story, no PO path.
- Mechanism missing. Promise without how. Buyers smell it.
- Banned fluff on top of the label. Do not dress the platform in fluff verbs. Say what meetings they get.
Salesforce's ~27% quota reality is a reminder: pretty category pages do not book. Clear desire under a clear label does more work than another synonym for "platform."
How do I rewrite one paragraph this week?
Take your hero. Split it.
Old: "The AI outbound platform for modern GTM teams."
New: "Turn live buying signals into held meetings this week. Outbound platform with rails, not spray."
Same label. Desire and mechanism up front. Knife intact.
Would you rather win the category keyword and lose the call, or win the call because they felt the gap and saw the path?
Adapt or fail. Market the desire under the purchase label.
FAQ
Is the purchase label the same as positioning?
No. Positioning is who / why / how. The label is the shoppable noun. You need both.
Can I invent a new category label?
Rarely. Inventing a label is expensive. Better to own desire under a label buyers already type, unless you have real proof to move the market.
Where does the label go on a landing page?
Nav, comparison, pricing, and FAQ. Hero can lead with desire. Footer and schema can keep the noun clear.
How does this fit Signals → Convert → Grow?
Signals find who is warm. Convert sells desire under the label. Grow spends where people already search that label while feeling the pain.
What if sales wants feature lists?
Put features under mechanism steps. Features prove how. They are not the first line.
