What is a proof asset before the demo?
A proof asset is the artifact you send before the calendar hold. It earns the meeting and filters tire-kickers. It is not the same problem as a bad demo.

What is a proof asset before the demo?
A proof asset is a concrete artifact you send before the demo so the meeting is earned and tire-kickers filter themselves out.
It can be a Loom of the exact workflow they signaled, a one-pager that quotes their buying window, a simple calculator, or a sample output that looks like their job. It is not a generic deck. It is not a 40-minute product tour booked on hope.
Send a proof asset before the demo. Earn the meeting with a concrete artifact. Filter tire-kickers before they burn the calendar.
How is this different from a bad demo?
Earlier I wrote about the demo that should never be booked. That post is about the meeting itself going wrong: wrong buyer, no problem, theater on Zoom.
This post is the step before the hold. Convert still needs a path to a meeting. The proof asset is how you raise belief and cut waste without making inbound your only plan. Inbound fails for a lot of AI products in 2026 for a reason. Waiting for form fills is not a Convert system.
What counts as a proof asset?
Four shapes that usually pass a stranger's grunt test:
- Workflow Loom (2-5 minutes). Show the exact job they care about. Narrate the outcome. Do not narrate your roadmap.
- Signal one-pager. One page that restates their signal (pricing page path, G2 category research, competitor engagement) and the plain outcome you create. Market the desire under the purchase label, not the feature list.
- Calculator or scorecard. Simple inputs, honest outputs. No fake precision. If you do not have a sourced number, show the method instead of inventing a percentage.
- Sample output. A redacted example of the artifact your product produces: a scored account list, a first-touch note draft, a weekly review template filled with their kind of signal.
If the asset could ship to any logo with a find-replace, it is not a proof asset. It is a brochure.
Why send it before the calendar hold?
Because about 95% of B2B buyers are out of market (Ehrenberg-Bass / LinkedIn B2B Institute). A demo invite into the 95% trains your team to perform. A proof asset into a real window lets the in-market buyer self-select.
Salesforce still puts about 27% of reps at quota. Calendar full of tire-kickers is one reason. Proof assets move some of the qualification earlier, when it is cheap.
The desire under "book a demo" is usually certainty: will this work on my problem, with my data, without wasting an hour. The proof asset sells that certainty. The demo then confirms it with their context.
How do you use a proof asset in Convert?
- Signal arrives and clears the weekly cap.
- You write a signal-matched note.
- You attach or link one proof asset that fits that signal.
- You ask for a meeting only after they engage the asset, or you use the asset as the reason the meeting will not be a tour.
- No engage, no demo. Soft nurture or kill. Do not reward curiosity with your best hour.
That is Convert discipline. Not being rude. Being honest about calendar math.
What failure modes show up?
- Sending a 20-slide deck and calling it proof
- Recording a Loom that is really an origin story
- Inventing ROI numbers the asset cannot defend
- Using the asset as a gate that never offers a human path when they are ready
- Skipping the asset and booking demos to "keep pipeline healthy"
Would you rather ten demos with people who never opened the proof, or four demos with people who already saw their workflow and still want the call?
Adapt or fail. Proof before hold. Meeting with a path. Demo for confirmation, not for discovery theater.
FAQ
Is a case study a proof asset?
Only if it is specific enough to map to their signal and job. A logo wall is social proof, not a proof asset. Prefer a short story with a mechanism they can recognize.
Should every outbound note include a proof asset?
Not every cold first touch. Use it when the window is real and a meeting is the next honest ask. Early signal notes can mention the asset exists. Attach it when you are asking for time.
How long should a proof Loom be?
Short enough that a busy founder finishes it. Aim under five minutes. If you need twenty, you are demoing, not proving.
How does this fit Signals, Convert, Grow?
Signals finds the window. Convert uses the proof asset to earn and filter the meeting. Grow scales the asset types that correlate with held meetings, not with vanity clicks.
