Engaging a competitor's post means attention. It does not mean they are buying you this week.

How to use competitor LinkedIn engagement as a GTM signal
A like is not a buying window.
People engage competitor posts because they know the person, like the take, or are bored in a feed. That is attention. Attention is useful. It is not proof they will take a meeting with you this week.
Competitor LinkedIn engagement is a ping. Without fit and a second intent proof, it is spray with better stalking.
What counts as a useful competitor engagement signal?
Useful means three things stack.
- Fit: Title and account match ICP. Firmographic fit still gates.
- Recency: Engagement this week, not a heart from March.
- Second proof: Pricing page after de-anon, G2 category traffic, multi-page path in Factors.ai, stuck state in PostHog, or a hiring spike tied to the problem you solve.
Engagement alone is theater. Stacked, it becomes signal-based outbound.
Ehrenberg-Bass / LinkedIn B2B Institute: ~5% in-market. Competitor fans are not automatically that 5%.
How do I pull the signal without building a spam farm?
Watch competitor executives and product marketers, not every employee selfie.
Log who from ICP accounts commented with substance (questions about pricing, migration, limits). Ignore "Congrats!" and emoji-only.
Enrich only the survivors in Clay. Then write a first line that could only exist because of that comment. "Saw your question on [Competitor]'s thread about migration downtime" beats "Loved your engagement."
Tools as examples: Clay for enrichment after the ping, RB2B or Vector if they also hit your site, G2 if they are comparison shopping. Sensors. Not the strategy.
What should the first touch say?
Name the signal. Name the desire underneath. Ask for a meeting sized to the window.
Do not dunk on the competitor in the first line. Buyers hate being recruited into your feud. Contrast the mechanism: how you create the outcome differently. Keep the grunt test passable in one breath.
Gong's ~3.4% cold email reply floor is what you get when the note could have gone to anyone who liked a post. Make it unable to go to anyone else. See first-touch note.
How do I measure if this signal is real?
Track meetings booked from competitor-engagement cohorts vs firmographic-only cohorts.
If engagement-sourced sends never outperform spray, kill the source. Meetings are the scoreboard. Meetings, not theater.
Salesforce: ~27% of reps hit quota. More LinkedIn stalking will not fix a message that fails the grunt test.
Would you rather 200 "liked competitor" rows, or 20 rows with fit + engagement + a second intent proof?
You need 7 sales, not 7,000 polite likes.
Adapt or fail. Soft signals earn a soft ask until a hard signal shows up.
What mistakes burn this signal fastest?
Three.
Copying their comment into a dunk. Recruiting them into your competitor feud. Sending the same note to everyone who liked the same post.
The fourth: waiting three weeks, then writing like the engagement just happened. Recency is a leg of the stool. Let it go cold and you are back on firmographic spray.
I would rather miss a soft ping than send a late note that proves I was lurking without a reason to talk.
FAQ
Is competitor LinkedIn engagement intent?
Soft intent at best. Treat it as a wake-up ping. Require a second proof before a demo ask.
Should I engage their post before I email?
Only if you have something useful to say in public. Fake comments to warm a lead are obvious and burn trust.
What about people who engage my posts?
Same rules. Fit + recency + second proof. Fans are not automatically buyers.
Can AI watch competitor engagement for me?
Yes for ranking and alerts. No for deciding the send alone. Humans still kill weak rows.
How does this relate to G2 signals?
G2 category traffic is often harder intent. LinkedIn engagement is earlier. Stack them when both fire.
