Owned signals beat rented scrapes

When a public feed closes, rented scrapes die with it. Site de-anon, G2 category traffic, product usage, and CRM truth are signals you still own.

Owned signals beat rented scrapes

Rented public feeds are not a GTM system. They are someone else's pipe with an expiration date.

On Sep 30, TechCrunch reported that Reddit is ending RSS feeds on Nov 13 and will shut down public API access by March 2027, citing AI bots scraping at scale. Third-party apps must register by Jan 12, 2027. AI assistants will need commercial deals for Reddit data. That is a platform choice. The GTM lesson is older than Reddit.

When the rented feed closes, only owned signals still book meetings.

What does Reddit ending RSS have to do with your pipeline?

It is the same failure mode as building outbound on a public scrape you do not control.

Teams treat open web feeds, free scrapers, and "public intent" dumps as durable demand. Then the owner changes the terms. Access shrinks. The list goes stale overnight. You are left with a sequencer full of contacts and no reason to believe they are still in market.

I am not telling you to stop reading Reddit for research. I am telling you that a GTM motion that depends on a free public API is not a motion. It is a temporary subsidy.

What counts as an owned signal?

A signal you can keep collecting after the third-party feed dies.

Owned signals live in systems you instrument or pay for under a contract you can renew:

  1. Website de-anonymization. Company and (when available) person resolution on your own pages. I covered the mechanics in website de-anonymization for B2B GTM. That traffic is yours. The vendor can change pricing. The visit still happened on your domain.
  2. G2 category and competitor traffic. Review and compare behavior in the category where you sell. That is why G2 category pages become buying signals when you treat them as intent, not as vanity badges.
  3. Product usage. Activation events, feature adoption, invite loops. Tools like PostHog turn product behavior into GTM signals you already own.
  4. CRM truth. Closed-won patterns, closed-lost reasons, champion changes, open opportunities. Ugly and incomplete. Still more durable than a scraped subreddit dump.

Signal-based outbound only works when the signal has a source you can still query next quarter.

Why do teams keep building on rented scrapes?

Because the first list looks cheap and the first replies feel like progress.

A free feed fills a spreadsheet. An agent drafts notes. Someone books two meetings. The story becomes "public intent works." What actually worked was a temporary window of access plus a small sample. When the window closes, the playbook has no rails. You cannot re-run last month's scrape if the API is gone.

This is the same pattern as buying a contact database and calling it ICP. The rows exist. The buying window does not.

What should I do before Nov 13?

Audit every signal source your team treats as "always on," and mark each one owned or rented.

  1. List the feeds. RSS jobs, public APIs, scrapers, free intent dumps, community scrapes.
  2. Ask who can shut it off. If the answer is "them, tomorrow," it is rented.
  3. Map a replacement owned signal for every rented one that books meetings today. Site visits, G2, product usage, CRM, or a paid data contract with clear terms.
  4. Stop wiring new volume into rented feeds. Research is fine. Production send is not.
  5. Score meetings by signal source for 30 days. If most meetings come from rented scrapes, you do not have a durable acquisition system. You have a countdown.

What does Signals mean here?

Signals is the work of finding who is in market without pretending a free feed lasts forever.

Adapt or fail. Own the signal, or own the downtime when the feed dies.

FAQ

Is Reddit RSS really ending?

TechCrunch reported on Sep 30 that Reddit will end RSS on Nov 13 and end public API access by March 2027, with third-party app registration due by Jan 12, 2027. Treat those dates as the platform's published plan and verify on Reddit's own notices before you cut over.

Does this mean I should ignore public forums?

No. Use them for research and message testing. Do not make production outbound depend on a free public API you do not control.

What is the fastest owned signal to stand up?

Website de-anonymization on high-intent pages (pricing, comparison, docs) plus a weekly CRM export of open opportunities and champion changes. Both exist without a new scrape.

How do I tell owned from rented?

If a vendor or platform can revoke access tomorrow and your meeting source goes to zero, it is rented. If the event happened on your product, your site, or your CRM, it is closer to owned.

Can a paid data deal still be "owned"?

A contract with renewals and clear terms is more durable than a free scrape. It is still not as durable as product usage and site traffic. Mix both. Do not replace one brittle feed with another.
