What is category design for early SaaS?
Category design without proof is theater.
Early SaaS founders hear "own the category" and invent a noun. They put it on the homepage. Buyers still compare feature lists. Nothing changed except the jargon tax.
Ehrenberg-Bass / LinkedIn B2B Institute: about 95% of B2B buyers are out of market. That 5% in market will not care about your invented label if they cannot grunt what they get. Category language without proof is theater. Name the frame after they feel the desire, not before.
What is category design?
Category design is naming the problem space so buyers compare you on your frame, not on a feature dump.
You define the job. You define the failure mode of the old way. You give the buyer a short label for the motion you sell. Then every page, note, and demo uses that frame.
It is not a press release that invents "AI-native revenue orchestration" and hopes Gartner notices. It is not a deck that says you created a market. It is a purchase-facing sentence that makes the competitor look like the wrong tool for the job.
See who / why / how positioning. Who it is for. Why they care now. How the product creates the result. Category language sits on top of that, not instead of it.
Why do early SaaS teams get this wrong?
They skip proof and jump to naming.
They still fail the grunt test. A stranger cannot say what they get in one breath. So the team adds a category noun to sound bigger. The noun does not fix the message. It hides the miss.
Monday.com's inbound CTR dropped from 2.94% to 0.84%. That is a receipt about how hard attention got, not a reason to invent a category. Harder attention means clearer desire and mechanism, not louder theater.
Salesforce still puts about 27% of reps at quota. Renaming your category does not put the other 73% over the line. Meetings do.
When should early SaaS use category language?
After who / why / how is clear, and after at least one proof path exists.
Proof can be: closed deals that used the same story, a repeatable demo path, or a signal-matched outbound line that books meetings. Not a landing page A/B that only moved bounce rate.
If you cannot position an AI feature without a dump, you are not ready to name a category. You are ready to cut the dump.
Order for Product Marketer Pro: Signals, then Convert, then Grow. Category language is Grow-stage packaging. Signals find the window. Convert earns the meeting with plain outcome and mechanism. Grow scales the frame once the knife works.
How do you design a category frame without fake theater?
Four steps. Keep them short.
- Write the desire, not the purchase label. Buyers say they want "better pipeline visibility." Desire is control, fewer surprises, not depending on one AE's gut. Market the desire.
- Name the old failure in one line. "Feature dump demos. Spray outbound. Dashboards with no meetings." Make the enemy plain.
- Name your mechanism. Example tools only: PostHog for product truth, RB2B or Vector for de-anon, G2 for category intent, Factors.ai for account paths. Mechanism is the path. Tools are examples.
- Only then pick a short category phrase. If the phrase fails the competitor-name swap, kill it. If you swap your brand for a rival and the homepage still works, you have no frame.
That is GTM engineering applied to language: rails before volume. Frame before billboard.
What are common mistakes?
Inventing a category to impress investors while buyers still ask "so what does it do?"
Teaching the market a word before they feel the pain. Forrester's ~84-day B2B cycle already burns time. Do not add a glossary tax.
Copying a big company's category playbook when you have no distribution. They bought awareness. You need meetings.
Treating category design as a Grow vanity project while Convert still ships generic copy.
How do I pressure-test this week?
Pull your homepage H1 and subhead.
Ask: if I deleted the category noun, would a stranger still grunt the outcome? If no, the noun was load-bearing theater. Fix who / why / how first.
Then run the swap: put a competitor's name on your page. If it still reads true, you have no positioning. Fix that before you file a category trademark story.
Would you rather a clever category name and zero meetings, or a plain desire line and 7 sales?
Adapt or fail. Proof first. Frame second. Theater never.
FAQ
Is category design only for big brands?
No. Small teams can name a frame. They cannot invent fake market theater without proof. Start with who / why / how.
Should I invent a new category word?
Usually no. Prefer plain language that names the job. A new noun is optional packaging after the knife works.
How does this fit Signals → Convert → Grow?
Signals find windows. Convert sells desire and mechanism. Grow packages the frame once meetings prove the story.
What if investors want a category story?
Give them the desire, mechanism, and proof path. If they only want a noun, that is their problem, not your homepage's.
Can AI help write category copy?
AI as operator can draft options. You own the knife. Do not ship a model-generated noun that fails the grunt test.
